Habitat for Humanity of Kent County was founded in 1983 and completed the first home in 1984. Since then, the greater Grand Rapids community of donors, volunteers, and homebuyers have come together to build 400 homes and help revitalize neighborhoods.
By holding the mortgages of homes, Habitat Kent is able to use those mortgage payments to give back to Habitat affiliates around the globe to support their need for affordable housing. This “tithe” expands Habitat Kent’s local efforts and provides housing solutions around the globe. This unifies Habitat’s impact beyond languages, borders, and cultures.
In essence, homeowners in Grand Rapids are giving back to the mission to help people around the world achieve stability through homeownership. Past and present tithe partners include Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Guatemala, Congo, Uganda, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom and more.
