You Can Provide Strength and Stability

Like many communities across the country, Kent County is in an affordable housing crisis. Neighborhoods are changing rapidly. Families are living in overcrowded or unaffordable housing. When you give to Habitat Kent you are building more than four walls. A home is a safe place to grow up. A home is a foundation to build a future. A home can change lives. Join us in building a community where every family has a chance for a better tomorrow.

Donor Frequently Asked Questions…

Donor Privacy Policy

Click here to view Habitat Kent’s donor privacy policy.

How can I donate?

There are many ways to donate. Since you’re already on our website, the easiest way may be to donate online. You can also donate by mail or in person.

Please make checks payable to Habitat for Humanity of Kent County and mail or deliver to 425 Pleasant St. SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

Can I donate something other than money?

Certainly! Habitat Kent is always in need of materials, services and land for our building projects. These gifts-in-kind keep construction costs low and homeowner mortgages affordable. See above to learn more about donating gifts-in-kind.

You can also donate building supplies and home improvement items—everything from tools to appliances to furniture—at our Habitat ReStores. Your ReStore donations will be sold to the public at discount prices and proceeds will support our home builds. Click here to learn more about ReStore.

What percentage of my gift actually funds Habitat houses?

We’re committed to using your gift to support our mission. ReStore revenue and mortgage payments support our admin and fundraising costs, so every penny of every dollar donated goes directly to building homes, communities, and hope.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Yes, we send an acknowledgement letter for each gift received with the information needed to claim a deduction on your tax return.

Can I donate towards a specific house or project?

Yes. When you donate, you can designate your gift for a particular special build or initiative such as Women Build, Catholic United Build, or Habitat Kent’s Veteran Program.

Can I make Habitat a part of my will?

Yes, there are many options for planned and deferred giving. We would be happy to discuss those options with you personally. Please contact Mark Ogland-Hand at (616) 588-5243.

I’ve heard some employers match donations. Does that apply to me?

Many generous employers do match charitable donations. Please check with your human resources department or community outreach team to see if your employer matches donations.

  • Willingness to Partner

  • As part of the Willingness to Partner criteria, you will be required to pay a certain amount of the expenses incurred to repair your home. You will also be required to to sign a forgivable lien. Please read the following points carefully:
  • 1. The co-payment will be 40% of total project costs. Sweat Equity can be completed to lower the co-payment to 30% of the total project cost.

    2. You will be required to sign a forgivable lien also known as a forgivable second mortgage in the amount of the total project expenses. This lien will be reduced over time and will be forgiven after 5 years as long as you make your agreed upon payments. The forgivable lien helps ensure that you are not taking advantage of the program to repair your home so that you can immediately sell it for profit. Living in the home for at least 5 years after the repairs are complete effectively means the forgivable lien will not effect you at all.
