Reaching stability through homeownership

Habitat Kent offers a hand up, not a hand out. All Habitat homes are built or rehabbed to high standards of safety, health, and sustainability so households can begin their journey to affordable homeownership, opportunity, and stability.

New Homes

Types of homes

Newly built homes are available through our Traditional Homeownership Program. These simple, but attractive single-family homes are typically two-to-three bedrooms and two baths. They are energy efficient, fully handicap accessible and move-in ready when finished.

While there are several general floor plans available for new builds, some of the most common ones are pictured below. Habitat works with each homebuyer to help ensure the home fits their needs to the best of our ability.

Where we build

All new Habitat homes are built within the City of Grand Rapids in one of our three focus neighborhoods:

  • Baxter (Wealthy St SE, Fuller Ave SE, MLK St SE, Eastern Ave SE)
  • Black Hills (Market Ave SW, Godfrey Ave SW, Hall St SW, Freeman Ave SW)
  • Roosevelt Park (Wealthy St SW, Century Ave SW, Alger St SW, Clyde Park Ave SW, West border of Roosevelt Park, Godfrey Ave SW)

We are currently building in the Baxter Neighborhood and will continue building there and in the Madison Area throughout 2022 and 2023.

Rehabbed Homes

Types of homes

Fully rehabilitated homes are available through our Accelerated Homeownership Program. These single-family homes range in size and are rehabbed for energy efficiency, accessibility and are move-in ready.

Below are some examples of the homes that have been available through this program. For a full list of available homes, click here.

Where we build

Rehabbed homes are located anywhere within Habitat Kent’s service area including:

  • Kent County
  • Northern Allegan County
  • Eastern Ottawa County

Sustainability

At Habitat Kent, making homes affordable is as important as making them safe, healthy, and sustainable. Because of this, since 2007, all new homes built are LEED-certified and all rehabs are completed to meet our high standards.

Building for energy efficiency improves air quality in homes and their surrounding community, keeps our carbon footprint down, and helps future homeowners save hundreds of dollars in utility costs each year.

  • Habitat for Humanity of Kent County provides a variety of volunteer opportunities which can vary depending on the group size, age restrictions, season and general availability. Construction opportunities are full day commitments. Should you prefer a partial day activity or volunteers to work in shifts you will be scheduled for specific tasks or in one of our 3 ReStore locations.
  • Age restrictions apply to certain projects and will be enforced. Most tasks require volunteers to be at least 16 years old. Specific jobs may allow other ages. These restrictions will be indicated by a member of the volunteer services department when a date is offered.
  • Please acknowledge that you understand groups may not be confirmed until 30-60 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DATE AGREED UPON by our volunteer services department. Due to the volume of requests for volunteer opportunities, we will ask that you agree/disagree to the date we offer within a week’s time (unless otherwise noted in our email). This ensures we can look for an alternative date if necessary and place you within a timely fashion.
  • After the completed form is submitted expect to be contacted by a member of our volunteer services department within one week.
