Beloved Community Luncheon

April 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the passage of the landmark fair housing Act—the last great legislative achievement of the civil rights era—signed into law just days after Dr. King’s assassination.

To honor the work and vision of Dr. King, Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country are hosting “Beloved Community Builds” and doing what Habitat does best, “bringing people together to build homes, community, and hope!” It is in that spirit that Habitat for Humanity of Kent County invites you to this free luncheon.

Please join us for a free special luncheon. We’ll commemorate this important chapter in our history. We’ll be challenged by the history of housing segregation in our community and be INSPIRED to become a community of HOPE!

Luncheon Speakers

Fred Johnson III Ph.d, M.Div is a professor of history at Hope College and Habitat Kent board member. He is uniquely qualified to inspire us with Martin Luther King’s vision of a community based on love and goodwill.

Liz Keegan Director of Outreach and Education at the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan, will present maps of Grand Rapids’ original redlining areas and explain the legacy of that bias and the protections the Fair Housing Act.
