Building Together in Muskegon
Staff build days have always been a standout volunteer day at Habitat Kent. They give our office and ReStore staff the chance to have a direct role in home construction. Recently, staff spent two days volunteering at our first home in Muskegon County, helping build a house that a local family will soon call home.
Project Accountant, David, shares, “There is a lot of power in being able to contribute to something so meaningful as creating a home and doing so when we are knowingly less than perfect at the task. Knowing I made that difference is why it was meaningful to me.”
During the two chilly winter days, staff hung siding and soffit and air-sealed the interior, ensuring the energy efficiency of the home. Team members from across departments came together to learn new skills, support one another, and collaborate in a different setting than our usual day-to-day work.
Sharon, Database Coordinator, says, “I was excited to help build a Habitat house in Muskegon – an area with so many wonderful qualities! I loved being hands-on with hanging siding and soffit, making this home attractive and comfortable. We met several neighbors who were intrigued by the project and were looking forward to meeting the family that will soon become part of their community. The whole experience made my work in the Habitat office so much more meaningful!”
Because this is our first home in Muskegon County, the build days were especially exciting. This project marks the beginning of construction on four homes in the area this year. We look forward to welcoming the future homeowner into the space and continuing to expand homeownership opportunities in Muskegon.
Thank you to the staff who volunteered, and to the many volunteers who continue to show up, support our mission, and help build homes in our community. Want to volunteer on a Habitat build site? Sign up here!
