World Habitat Day: Adequate Housing for All
The first Monday in October is globally recognized as World Habitat Day, advocating for the fundamental right to adequate housing. Every year, Habitat for Humanity joins our partners around the world to recognize the basic rights of everyone to have a decent place to live. This day reminds us of our ability to shape a brighter, sustainable future in our own community, right here in West Michigan.
Sharon, one of the first Habitat Kent homeowners, has lived in her home for 40 years, providing her family with the stability necessary to build pathways to their own future success. After years of renting and frequent moves, she watched the toll the uncertainty of renting took on her children. As a mother, she wanted to keep her children safe and provide them with the best opportunities.
Her older daughter, Linda, says that their Habitat home was a “game-changer,” providing a sense that the future was full of possibility, allowing her to “dream about big things”. After moving into their home, Linda was selected for the Black Education Excellence Program. Her participation led to a full-ride scholarship, and she became the first in her family to attend college, where she went on to receive her doctoral degree. Now Linda is a corporate vice president for a global manufacturing company.
Owning a home is the key to building stability and wealth, but with skyrocketing housing prices, millions of Americans, including our neighbors in Kent County, are locked out of the dream of homeownership. That’s where our work and mission come in. With the help of our community, we increase the supply of workforce housing for homebuyers with low- and moderate-incomes, expanding access to homeownership for people of all backgrounds, and keeping homes affordable and livable long-term. We are committed to our belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live.
