Why I Volunteer: The final part of our three-part volunteer stories series
Each year, over a thousand members of our community dedicate their time, talents, and hearts to helping further our mission of building homes, communities, and hope. They help on our board of directors and committees, on construction sites, at ReStore and community events, and more. Each of these individuals has their own “why” for showing up and getting involved. For the final part of our Why I Volunteer series, we sat down with Dennis, one of ReStore volunteers, to hear his “why”.
ReStore Volunteer Spotlight: Dennis
After retiring, Dennis wondered, “What am I going to do?”
His wife suggested he volunteer somewhere. Being familiar with Habitat for Humanity and recognizing the importance of our mission, he decided to give volunteering with Habitat Kent a try. So, in 2019 he began working on our construction sites, then did a little Material Recovery, and when he went to ReStore, he knew he’d found his niche. He felt drawn toward the energy of the ReStore, became close with the other volunteers and staff, and admired how hard everyone worked to get their jobs done. Now, his unofficial title is “Donation Receiver” and “Retail Support.” He’s at the door to take donations, make sure items are clean, and test appliances before they are ready to go out on the store floor.
Dennis gets great satisfaction from volunteering. He’s lived in and around Grand Rapids for 40 years and wanted to give back to this great community.
“It feels good, helping the community while helping yourself. I have purpose as each new day begins, helping others and physically being busy is healthy.”
“Neat freak” is the characteristic Dennis gives himself. Claiming that title and considering himself a minimalist, Dennis likes it when things are picked up and put together. So, when he started volunteering at ReStore North and the volunteer work area in the back of the store was disorganized, he took initiative and got to work setting up a work bench. After a while, a rack for tools was donated so he put that up and arranged for better lighting to be installed. Now when a donated dryer or fridge comes and needs to be tested, everyone can find just what they need to get the job done.
Dennis has now been volunteering three times a week for almost three years. If you’re thinking about volunteering with Habitat Kent he recommends, “Just try it! There are lots of opportunities for any interest you may have, either at the ReStore or on the construction site.”
