“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” – Malachi 3:10
The definition of a tithe within Habitat for Humanity is essentially the same as the biblical definition of tithe – to take 10 percent of what we have been blessed with and give it back to God. Through Habitat’s Tithe program, Habitat affiliates in the United States are encouraged to donate 10 percent of all unrestricted cash donations each year to further the organization’s work in other countries.
The operational decision to tithe is based on Habitat’s biblical roots as a Christian ministry that represents various Christian backgrounds. Tithing within Habitat also ensures that funding reaches the countries that have both a Habitat presence and some of the greatest need. This is crucial to global stability because places with greater poverty and economic challenges have fewer citizens with the monetary ability to donate.
In 2015, Habitat Kent was recognized for exceeding $1 million in tithing at the Habitat Affiliate Summit in Atlanta, GA.
And over our 33-year history, we're honored to share a milestone- our tithing has recently exceeded $1 million and served 297 families worldwide. The tithing has empowered Habitat’s mission in 30 plus countries across the globe. The past two years we have tithed to Habitat Haiti in order to enhance their ability to serve more people in critical need of housing.
This is an example of putting faith into action. At Habitat Kent we believe that meeting the needs of our community is connected with meeting the needs of the world. That’s why tithing is crucial to our mission and why we believe helping nations like Haiti that are in desperation of shelter, helps us build our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
100 percent of tithe donations are sent internationally and used to serve families through Habitat’s National Organizations. The tithing by affiliates is not used to support Habitat for Humanity International operations in the United States or the Area Offices. Habitat Kent tithing only comes from unrestricted donor funds ensuring that donors that want their gifts to go towards our community will go completely to building homes and communities in Kent County.
