Shaun, Yvette, and their children Nyasia, (16) Shaun Jr., (13) and Tayshaun, (10) are thrilled to be moving into their Habitat home on Grand Rapids’ west side. The home build was sponsored by Thrivent Financial. Yvette discovered Habitat Kent’s program through one of her friends, an 11-year Habitat homeowner. they’re excited to leave the cramped rented house they have been living in.

A Habitat home means “stability” for this family. “I want to be here for years. And for my kids to be here for years,” Yvette said. The family already spends a lot of time together on the west side, whether they’re at the YMCA or with family and friends. Yvette can’t wait for the day where she can have their friends walk to their house for a barbeque.

Their home also means empowerment. “It felt amazing to earn the home. To work for it. It’s not just something they give to you,” Yvette said. “All of the sweat equity classes were helpful,” Shaun added. “I enjoyed the whole experience.”

During their Habitat journey, Shaun and Yvette were inspired to give back to other partner families. Together, they ended up donating more than 50 hours of sweat equity to other partner families. “I almost broke down in tears when I listened to a message from a grateful single mom who we dedicated hours to,” Yyvette said.

“I wanted to build at every Habitat home I could,” Shaun said. “It was amazing to see the kids and family’s smiling faces when they received their home. I got to be a part of building their house. And I loved it. And now, I can also fix things in my own house.”

Shaun and Yvette feel blessed and thankful that God has opened up another door for them. They would like to thank everyone who helped their dream of homeownership become a reality. Yvette plans on going back to school while Shaun aspires to start his own construction business. The family is also excited to stay involved in volunteering together at Habitat Kent.

Selfless and thankful attitudes like theirs inspire and remind us the importance of giving back. Many hands and hearts go into the building of a Habitat home—so on behalf of Yvette, Shaun, Nyasia, Shaun Jr.—and Tayshaun thanks for building them a hopeful future.

The dedication is on Sunday December 6th, at 2pm. The dedication will take place at 920 Douglas Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
