Spartan Stores Steps Up

Spartan Stores received the 2007 Sponsor of the Year award during Habitat for Humanity of Michigan's 12th annual awards banquet, held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing, Michigan in February of 2008.

Spartan Stores, the nation’s 10th largest grocery distributor, partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County in 2006 to launch the first-ever scanning program through its D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fare Supermarkets in Grand Rapids and Holland, raising enough money to build a Habitat home. Spartan associates volunteered their time to help build the home along with the Habitat homebuyer.

In 2007, Spartan built a second home, and announced it intended to expand the scanning program statewide in 2008, including Spartan’s Felpausch Stores and Glen’s Markets with D&W Fresh Markets and Family Fares in their efforts to raise money to eliminate substandard housing. With this award, Spartan Stores joins an elite group of corporate sponsors, including Holland-based Prince Corporation, the Detroit Edison Foundation, Ford Motor Company, Fifth Third Bancorp, Whirlpool Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company, and last year’s winner, the Great Lakes Capital Fund.
