FAQ for ReStore Volunteers

What should I wear to volunteer at the ReStore?

Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and closed toe/heel shoes (athletic shoes or boots are best; please no ballet slippers, crocs, heels, clogs or sandals). The ReStore warehouses aren't heated, so dress accordingly.

I'll be there all day. Do you provide lunch?

Unfortunately, lunches will not be provided by the ReStores. You shoul dplan to bring a lunch as it may be inconvenient to drive to a store or restaurant over the lunch break. Feel free to take along a snack as well.

I'm supposed to start at 9 am, but the store doesn't open until 10 am. How do I get in?

When you arrive, please call Tim, Habitat ReStore's AmeriCorps Volunteer Recruiter, at 517-643-0835.

I would love to get my family involved. Can I bring my kids along with me?

Anyone under age 18 volunteering at the ReStore must have a parent/guardian cosign their waiver before beginning work. The minimum age for unaccompanied volunteering at the ReStore is 16 due to safety concerns. Kids who are under 16 may volunteer at the ReStore if accompanied by a chaperone. They can also help paint trim at the Habiat warehouse, and those 14 and above can paint and do landscaping on a construction site. Please contact Emma at 588-5240 for more information or email ewhelan@habitatkent.org.

Can I bring a group along?

Certainly! We can accmodate groups of up to 10 people vlunteering at the ReStore. Contact Tim, Habitat ReStore's AmeriCorps Volunteer Recruiter at 517-643-0835 for more information or email tlangenberg@habitatkent.org.

What will I be doing during my time there?

Your tasks will vary. If you are coming as a general volunteer, your tasks may include helping unload donations from vehicles, moving items to the floor, reorganizing or cleaning departments, helping customers load their vehicle with a new purchase among other tasks. We will make every effort to match you with your preferred tasks as we get to know you and your interests.

How does my time help Habitat?

Every task a volunteer does helps ease our operational costs. This means you are keeping our overhead cost down and allowing us to give more of the money spent at the ReStores back to Habitat home building projects. Nationally, the ReStore program is one of the largest sources of unrestricted funding Habitat receives, second only to the mortgage repayments we receive.

I have a special skill that I think would be helpful to Habitat but I don't see a catergory anywhere under the Volunteer descriptions. How can I help use that skill?

Contact Tim, Habitat ReStore's AmeriCorps Volunteer Recruiter at 517-643-0835 or tlangenberg@habitatkent.org to find out where and how you can help. We can use all types of skills from plumbing to artistic talent and everything inbetween.
