Start date: September 1 2009

Projected completion date: October 30 2009

Dedication date: Friday, October 30 2009 at 9:00am

Total gut rehab construction is a process of totally rebuilding the home while maintaining the original structural components. In the case of this home, the rehab will undergo the strict LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) for Homes® certification process. In 2007, Habitat Kent committed to building all of its homes to LEED for Homes® standards, and in 2008, they received a Gold Rating for their first Total Gut Rehab Habitat home. Habitat Kent has since built more single family LEED for Homes® Certified buildings than any other residential builder in the Midwest.

The Kick-Off for the build took place on Tuesday, September 1st on Dorchester SW with Senator Mark Jansen, R-Gaines Township, in attendance. Walmart associates began work by deconstructing the interior walls of the home and portions of the garage. Over 2,400 hours of volunteer time will be contributed by Walmart associates and their families during September and October in order to complete construction on the house. Walmart volunteers will be involved in weatherproofing, insulation, vinyl siding, trim carpentry, painting, landscaping and finishing details. The Grand Rapids home is one of nine (9) homes sponsored by Walmart Stores in the Michigan and Ohio region with all nine homes scheduled for dedication on October 30th.
