With a whopping $38,000 already raised, students at Forest Hills Eastern High School (FHE) are excited, committed and raring to raise the additional $37,000 needed to completely sponsor a new green, ZeroStep Habitat home. They also plan to provide all the volunteer labor needed to build the home. These kids aren’t kidding around.
Why did they decide to commit to such an enormous project? In their own words, they say “each of us can appreciate what a home means.” Home provides “security, safety and well being.” The fact that there are hard-working families in our community “without a decent or affordable home is both shocking and unacceptable to us. So much so, that we are willing to step up and work hard so that another family can enjoy the stability and security of a safe and decent home.”
In addition to various fundraising efforts including wrapping gifts at the mall over the holidays, hosting spaghetti dinners, and competing in a powder puff football game, FHE students are also approaching local businesses and asking for their assistance in raising money through “scholarships” for $1,000 -$10,000.
We can all rest a little easier when thinking of the future we are leaving to the younger generation if this is representative of what they do and how they care.
