Rockford high School’s Youth Initiative Program completed construction in Grand Rapids NW on the first high school student-led “gut rehab” project. Youth Initiative officers and members had been hard at work since the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year developing multiple fundraising events to support building a Habitat for Humanity home as a year-long community service project.
Students and community members provided support for this project through the Rockford Community Unity program, Rotary Fruit & Nut Sale, benefit concerts, pancake breakfast and multiple other events held to raise money toward this project. In addition, students received support from individuals, local businesses, churches and other community organizations.
Youth Initiative members made the decision to pursue a rehab home vs. new construction citing concerns for the effect vacant, run-down houses have on neighborhoods and wanting to do something positive to impact a neighborhood and a family that would benefit from their efforts. As a result, Rockford High School students began construction on a 1,200 sq/ft Grand Rapids NW home under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) and took part in every phase of construction from demolition, reframing, siding, trim carpentry, painting, landscaping and more. Once finished, the house became a home to a family of six.
